                           "FAMOUS CHICAGO QUOTES"!!!

"I had seen nothing sacred & the things that were glorious, had no glory & the sacrifices were like the "Stockyards of Chicago"!!!! Ernest Hemingway, Farewell to Arms!!!!

I'm a little hoarse tonight. I've been living in Chicago for the past two months & been yelling for help on the way home every night.. Things are so tough in Chicago, that at Easter time for bunnies, the kids use porcupines!!!!   Fred Allen, 1956, in Much Ado about Nothing!!!!

My 1st day in Chicago, September 4th, 1983. I set foot in this city & just walking down the street, it was like roots, like the motherland, I knew I belonged.  Oprah Winfrey!!!!

It is hopeless for the occasional visitor to try & keep up with Chicago. She outgrows his prophecies faster than he can make them. She is always a novelty. She is never the Chicago you saw when you passed through the last time.     Mark Twain, 1883!!!

New York is one of the capitals of the World. Los Angeles is a consellation of plastic while San Francisco is a lady. Boston has become urban renewal, while Philidelphia, Washington & Baltimore wink like dull diamonds in the smog of eastern metropolis. New Orleans is unremarkable after the French Quarter. Detroit is a one trade town. Pittsburg has lost its golden triangle while St Louis has become the golden arch of the corporation. The oil depletion has made Dallas & Houston naught, but Chicago is the great American City. Perhaps its the last of the Great American Cities....

"SWEET HOME CHICAGO",, In 1883 Bill Granger wrote  A lot of real Chicago lives in the neighborhood taverns. It is the mixed German and Irish and Polish gift to the city. A bit of the old country, grafted into a strong new plant for the new!!!

I'm going to St Petersburg Florida tomorrow. Let the working citizens of Chicago get their liquor the best they can. I'm sick of the job...its thankless & full of grief. I've been spending the best years of my life as a public benefactor!!    Al Capone.

I've reported murders, scandals, national & local politics. I've been amused, intrigued, outraged, enthralled & exasperated by Chicago. I've come to love this American giant, viewing it as the most mis-understood, most underrated city in the world. There is none other quite like my "City of Big Shoulders".  Irv Kupcinet..1941!!!

Chicago is a city of contradictions, of private visions haphazardly overlaid & linked together. If the city was unhappy with itself yesterday, it will reinvent itself today.  Pat Colander "A Metropolis of no Little Plans" May 1985!!!
